Are there different types of schools?
Yes, as well as the usual Local Authority (LA) Schools managed by us, there are Voluntary Aided Schools and Voluntary Controlled Schools which are explained in more detail if you click on the Related Pages link on the right. There are four types of school in Newham: Community; Voluntary Controlled (where the Local Authority sets the admission criteria); Foundation; and Voluntary Aided (where the governing body of the school sets the admission criteria). In Newham secondary schools these are Stratford Foundation School, and two Catholic voluntary aided schools, St. Angela's Ursuline School and St. Bonaventure's Catholic Comprehensive School. How do I apply for a school place for my child?
More details about applyling for a school place can be found under Finding a School Place on the Related Pages section on the right. You can also use the School Finder website to find the nearest school to your home address found under Useful Websites on the right. The Ofsted website found under Useful Websites is useful to view the schools latest Ofsted Reports to give you an objective view of the school you may be considering.
