Services for Visually Impaired Adults

FAQs

What if I have problems with my sight?
The first contact for most people will be with their optician or local optometrist. It is important to have regular examinations. An eye examination is not simply about getting glasses - it's also a vital health check. There is a charge for eye tests but you may be entitled to help or free examinations. Ask your local social security office for more details.
What if I have significant sight problems which cannot be improved with glasses?
You can contact us for information or for details of sources of help. See our contact details later in this pack. Ask your optician for a form LVI 2003. This is a self-referral letter to be sent to Social Services. Once we have received this we will contact you and tell you about the different types of help available.
What is registration?
If your Consultant feels that your eyesight cannot be corrected he may suggest registering you as a visually impaired person. Following discussion with you, your Consultant will complete a certificate to be forwarded to the Sensory Disability Team. This form is called a CVI 2003 or you may hear it referred to by its previous name, BD8. Registration is voluntary, so if you agree, your name will be added to the list of visually impaired people in the borough. This list is confidential and your details will not be shared with anyone without your consent. Registration does mean that you are usually entitled to certain benefits and concessions. We will also offer you an assessment of your needs.
What if I am also having problems with my hearing?
We can help you if you are also having difficulties with your hearing. Please see our related pages section for more information about our services for deaf or hard of hearing adults.more...
