Special Educational Needs (SEN)
Inclusion for
children with special education needs
Newham has a policy of inclusive
education. This means that we aim to support children with special
educational needs in mainstream schools, where all children get the
same opportunities to learn and mix socially with each
other.
Children with special educational needs are in most cases catered
for from within the normal resources of the school. A staged
procedure of assessment and provision is in operation.
For many children, a brief period on the school-based stages of
assessment will be all that is necessary.
Today, most of our mainstream schools have some children with
statements of special educational need (a statement is the legal
document that safeguards the specific support that a particular
child needs and specifies the mainstream or special school the
child should attend).
A statement of special educational need will only be issued to a
very tiny number of children. There are support staff in school to
help these and other pupils and teams of specialists able to come
into school to offer guidance and advice.
A small number of mainstream schools have extra resources so that
they can offer, in a mainstream setting, particular types of
support to certain groups of children.
If you want help or advice, the first person to contact is the
Head Teacher of your school, who will probably refer you to the
class teacher or the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator
(SENCo). They will tell you about the school's policy and the
support available for your child.
We are keen to work in partnership with parents. We value the
views of parents. You will be invited to regular review meetings to
discuss, for example, your child's Individual Education Plan
(IEP).
