New Handball Clubs in Newham

If you've got good hand-eye coordination and would like a new sporting challenge, then handball may just be the sport for you. Handball is one of the most popular sports in the world and the second most popular in Europe.

What is handball?

  • Handball is an indoor team sport that mixes high-speed action, gymnastic agility, sleight of hand and tremendous power with spectacular shots on goal.
  • It has been described as a sport combining all the best elements of basketball, water polo and football with a little bit of rugby thrown in.

Who can play handball?

  • Virtually anyone. You don't need to be a towering giant with arms the size of tree trunks to play (although that is certainly an advantage).
  • The rules are virtually the same for the men's and women's games: only the size of the ball is different. For children, the ball is smaller again.

Why handball?

  • It's an inexpensive activity that can easily be included in your programme.
  • It promotes team work, co-operation and friendships.
  • It develops the basic athletic skills used in all other sports.
  • It's easily modified to fit your space, time and number of participants.
  • It can be played by people of all sizes, ages and genders.
  • It's suitable for both beginners and experienced players. You can play in either men's, women's teams, or at mini and recreational level mixed teams.
  • It's easy to learn and a great way to get in shape.

Mini-handball for primary schools

  • This is a special version of the game using a smaller court and soft balls for safety and confidence.
  • It's easy to introduce from early years.
  • It's easy to learn as there are very few rules.
  • It involves running, throwing, catching, balance, jumping and team work.
  • It has a low equipment cost - soft balls and plastic mini-goals (possible to adapt plastic football goals).

Handball in Great Britain

  • The number of men's and women's clubs in Great Britain is steadily increasing.
  • Clubs play in national league, British Cup and European challenge cup competitions.
  • Junior leagues are being set up in all regions.
  • Clubs are keen to work with schools to develop links and provide ways for players to participate and progress in the sport.
