Traffic Controls

Cumberland Residential Haven - Traffic calming proposals and 20 mph zone

The council want to consult with local residents and businesses on proposals to introduce traffic calming aimed at reducing accidents, speeding and rat-running.

Introduction

The area known as 'Cumberland Residential Haven' has been identified as having an accident and speeding problem Because of this it has been incorporated into this year's road safety programme. Roads within the area will be made safer by implementing various traffic calming measures, and a 20mph zone.

This site explains the proposal in outline terms. A more detailed plan is on display at the Canning Town Local Service Centre, 3 Beckton Road, Canning Town, London E16.

Your views are important and can help make these improvements a success, so please take the time to view the display at the Local Service Centre.

Background

The Cumberland Residential Haven lies between Barking Road, the A13, New Barn Street and Prince Regents Lane and consists of a number of partially traffic calmed roads. The area is predominantly residential with some businesses and a school. Between 2003 - 2006, there have been seven (7) recorded personal injury accidents within the area, one (1) resulting in serious injury and one (1) involving a child pedestrian. Two (2) of the seven (7) involved speed, and one (1) occurred on wet road conditions. Speed surveys were carried out on the roads within the Cumberland area and the average speed was found to be above 20mph. Introducing a 20mph speed limit together with area wide traffic calming would reduce the average speed of vehicles, accidents and improve road safety and environment across the area.

Proposed Measures

To reduce the number of accidents, speed and rat running of traffic in the area, the Council is proposing the following measures, as shown on the reverse side of this leaflet:

  • A 20mph zone with associated signing
  • Entry treatments consisting of red coloured surfacing with a 20mph road marking
  • Round top road humps
  • Part of Holborn Road, Palmer Road and Cumberland Road to become one way , as shown on the plan
  • Speed tables at entrances to the 20mph zone

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL NOT BE ANY LOSS OF PARKING SPACE

Cars will be able to park on speed humps andspeed cushions
