Traffic Controls

Geere Residential Haven - Area wide traffic calming proposals and 20 mph zone

The council want to consult with local residents and businesses on proposals to introduce traffic calming aimed at reducing accidents, speeding and rat-running.
The area known as 'Geere Residential Haven' has been identified as having an accident and speeding problem. Because of this it has been incorporated into this year's road safety programme. Roads within the area that are not already traffic calmed will be made safer by implementing various traffic calming measures.

The council is consulting with local residents and businesses on the proposals to introduce a 20mph zone to improve road safety.

This site explains the proposal in outline terms. A more detailed plan is on display at the Plaistow Community Forum notice board located outside Plaistow Station, Plaistow Road, E13. Your views are important and can help make these improvements a success, so please take the time to view the display at the community notice board and complete the questionnaire.

Background

The Geere area is bounded by Portway, Densham Road, New Plaistow Road, Plaistow Road, Clegg Street, Pelly Road, Terrace Road and Stopford Road and consists of a few already traffic calmed streets.

Between 2003-2006, there have been four (4) recorded personal injury accidents within the area. Of these one resulted in serious injury and the rest slight injury. One of the four injuries involved a pedestrian, one involved speed and two occurred during the hours of darkness. Speed surveys were carried out on the roads within the Geere area and the average speed was found to be above 20mph. In order to reduce the average speed within the area, introducing an area wide 20mph speed limit together with traffic calming would reduce accidents and improve road safety.

Proposed measures

To reduce the speed and number of accidents in the area, the council is proposing the following measures.

  • A 20mph zone with associated signing
  • Red entry treatments consisting of coloured surfacing with a20mph road marking
  • Round top road humps
  • Speed tables at entrances to the 20mph zone
  • Speed cushions

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL NOT BE ANY LOSS OF PARKING SPACE

Cars will be able to park on speed humps andspeed cushions.
