Traffic Controls

Skiers Residential Haven - Area-wide traffic calming proposals and 20 mph zone

The council want to consult with local residents and businesses on proposals to introduce traffic calming aimed at reducing accidents, speeding and rat-running.

'Skiers Residential Haven' has been identified as an area where remedial measures can be effective in reducing vehicle speeds, crashes and incidences of rat-running (traffic short cuts). The council has a road safety programme, funded by Transport for London (TfL), aimed at reducing these problems, and making these areas safer for all road users.

This page explains the proposal in outline terms. A more detailed plan is on display Stratford and West Ham Community Forum notice board, Gurney Memorial traffic island, Stratford Broadway, Stratford E15. Your views are important and can help make these improvements a success, so please take the time to view the display.

Background

The Skiers area is bounded by West Ham Lane, New Plaistow Road, Manor Road, Mitre Road, Abbey Road, Bridge Road and Broadway and consists of a number of traffic calmed and 20mph streets.

Between 2003-2006, there have been nine (9) recorded personal injury accidents within the area. Of these, three involved pedestrians, three involved speed, two involved cyclists and two occurred during rainy conditions. Speed surveys were carried out on the roads within the Skiers area and the average speed was found to be above 20mph. In order to reduce the average speed within the area, introducing an area-wide 20mph speed limit together with traffic calming would reduce accidents and improve road safety.

Proposed Measures

To reduce the speed and number of accidents in the area, the council is proposing the following measures.

  • A 20mph zone with associated signing
  • Red entry treatment consisting of coloured surfacing with a 20mph road marking
  • Round top road humps
  • Speed tables at entrances to the 20mph zone
  • Speed cushions

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL NOT BE ANY LOSS OF PARKING SPACE.

Cars will be able to park on speed humps.

Please give us your views
