Transport Planning
Crossrail
Crossrail aims to relieve congestion and
support the development of London by providing new rail lines from
east to west and north to south.

Two eastern routes of the ambitious project could pass
through Newham - one via Stratford and another through the Royal
Docks. They would create a 'golden corridor' providing a huge boost
to the economies on the route, providing thousands of jobs and
homes for local people.
The Council aims to maximise the benefits to Newham residents and
to the Thames Gateway region. We have been campaigning vigorously
with our partners to make sure that Crossrail comes though both
Stratford and the Royal Docks.
In 2004 the Government announced that a hybrid Bill for Crossrail
will be introduced at the earliest opportunity.
What is Crossrail
The Crossrail project will vastly improve London's public transport
by delivering two new railway lines. A new company, called Cross
London Rail Links Limited, has been set up to develop and promote
these lines. It is a 50/50 joint venture between Transport for
London (TfL) and the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA).
Cross London Rail Links Limited (CLRL) has now announced
its preferred route known as Crossrail 1. See the Crossrail leaflet
and map for details.
What is the Crossrail 1 route? The basic
route for Crossrail 1 will connect Paddington in the west and
Liverpool Street in the east - this is the route upon which the
Government consulted in 2004.
While the preferred route is fixed, there is still some flexibility
in the plans.
Leaflet and
map from Crossrail explains the details.
How will Crossrail affect Newham? Both of the
eastern spurs in the preferred route pass through Newham.
One line travels from Liverpool Street through Whitechapel to
Stratford; on to Forest Gate, Manor Park and then to Ilford and
Romford, ending at Shenfield. A second spur will travel from the
Isle of Dogs (for Canary Wharf) to the North Kent Line to
Ebbsfleet.
Better rail connections to London and the South East would
obviously improve the transport choices for Newham residents. But
they would also provide a major economic boost - not just to Newham
but to the wider region too. |
