Listed Buildings of
Local and National Importance
Newham is host to a significant number of
old buildings, some dating back to the 12th Century.
Listed Buildings are those that appear on the national
list of buildings compiled by English Heritage.
Listed buildings are defined as buildings of special architectural
or historic interest and once listed becomes subject to special
planning controls. A listed building consent is required for works
that affect its special interest. The listing applies to the whole
of building, both internal and external, and any curtilage
structures such as outbuildings and boundary walls.
Works requiring consent may be either internal or external works
and extend from the smallest project to wholesale demolition.
Carrying out unauthorised work to a listed building is a criminal
offence punishable by a fine or a prison sentence and the local
council can require you to put the building back as it was. Most
works to a listed building require Listed Building Consent. If you
are in any doubt contact the duty planning officer on Tel: 020 8430
2000 prior to carrying out any works.
Newham also has a local list detailing buildings of
architectural or historic interest. These are buildings that do not
meet the criteria for inclusion on the national list but are
nevertheless important in the local context.

the case for listing to
English Heritage. You should also notify us so
that we can put our own suggestions forward.
Scheduled Ancient Monuments
Newham has two Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Any works to them
require approval from the Secretary of State. These are the remains
of Stratford Langthorne Abbey and the World War Two Gun
Emplacements below Beckton Park.
In recent years a "National Register of Parks and Gardens of
Special Historic Interest" has been drawn up by English Heritage.
This includes the City of London Cemetery at Aldersbrook and West
Ham Park. Development proposals affecting these areas of interest
must be sensitive to their special qualities. |
