Urban Design and Heritage Conservation

The Conservation and Urban Design Team

The conservation and urban design team aim to improve the attractiveness of the borough through the promotion and maintenance of better buildings and spaces, both old and new.
There are two officers within the development control section dedicated to conservation and urban design. Their primary function is to contribute towards the development of a better borough townscape by promoting better design standards in new developments and the retention and restoration of older buildings of merit.

They achieve this primarily by providing the council with advice on planning applications and through-projects. Work may also be proposed by private property owners or public authorities, including the council itself.

Many different schemes

The scale of new schemes being considered range significantly, from huge developments such as Stratford City, Silvertown Quays and the DLR extension, to medium sized schemes such as new housing developments, schools and community facilities, to everyday alterations to houses and shops.

Projects are varied but include the physical upgrading of Forest Gate shopping centre (part funded by English Heritage); plans to redevelop Sprowston Mews; and a historic management plan for the City of London Cemetery (paid for by the Corporation of London and the Heritage Lottery fund).
