Urban Design and Heritage Conservation

Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS)

The HERS is one element of a multi-million pound programme of physical regeneration in the Forest Gate area.

HERS/ Partnership Schemes in Conservation Area (PSCA) encompasses the repair and cleaning of building fronts and the installation of new shop fronts in the Forest Gate Town Centre Conservation Area.

In 2006 it won the Regeneration category in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) London Regional awards, was a finalist in the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) awards, and received a 'mention' in the Civic Trust awards.

Missing or damaged architectural features have been restored to recreate the uniform nature of Victorian terraces. Much of the unsuitable modern signage and other clutter has been removed or replaced by features more in keeping with the heritage of the buildings.

Bold designs and bright colours
The late 2005 phase of this project around the station involved the use of bold designs and bright colours for a varied group of buildings.

HERS/PSCA are countrywide projects set up by English Heritage, the main objective being to improve run-down commercial areas through building improvements in Conservation Areas.

Our first HERS in Stratford was completed in 2004. This was followed by Forest Gate in the phases listed below. The PSCA project in Forest Gate has the same aims as HERS.

HERS
Phase 1: 13 properties improved by 2003
Phase 2: 12 properties improved by 2004
Phase 3: 21 properties improved by 2006

PSCA / HERS Phase 4
10 properties to be improved in 2008
