Voting and Elections

Introduction

Your vote is vital to democracy. Newham Councillors make decisions on your behalf and your vote is your way of choosing who will make these decisions for you.
Local councillors make on-the-ground decisions which affect your daily life - from education and welfare to refuse collection and street cleaning.

Becoming a Councillor

If you wish to take your role in the community beyond your vote, you might consider becoming a councillor. To find out more about how to become a councillor visit our How to become a Councillor pages. Whatever the level of your participation, your involvement is fundamental to making Newham Council work effectively for its residents.

Electoral Register

Our Electoral Services department maintains and updates the Electoral Register, which is published in full every December 1st. The Register can be viewed under supervision at any Local Service Centre.

Recent changes in legislation mean that rather than rely on the yearly canvass, you may now add or amend your details on the 1st of any month from January to September.

You may also choose to opt out of the Edited Electoral Register, a document which is available for anyone to purchase.
