"What is great about the Newham Fairtrade Group is the
diversity of the people that have been involved," explains Sarah
Williams, NFAP manager.
"The group includes people from all walks of life and faiths who
have come together because we care about what is happening to
communities across the world."
The Newham Fairtrade campaign aims to raise awareness and
increase availability of Fairtrade products in the borough.
Since the campaign started, the group has had many achievements
including:
- Newham is now recognised as a Fairtrade borough
- Attending community events to promote Fairtrade
- Organising our own Fairtrade events including Fairtrade fashion
and wine tasting
- Encouraging businesses such as the King Edward VII pub, Credon
Centre Café and local organisations, including East Thames Housing
Association, to start using Fairtrade.
The campaign now has a network of over 200 individuals.
Fairtrade Fortnight in Newham Fairtrade Fortnight is an
important part of any Fairtrader's diary. This year it runs from
February 25 to March 8 and the Newham Fairtrade Group has organised
activities that will be bigger and brighter than ever, as more and
more people get involved, celebrate and switch to Fairtrade!
Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham and supporter of the Newham
campaign adds
"I welcome the support of Newham Food Access Partnership for
Fairtrade Fortnight. Fairtrade has become a retailing phenomenon,
boosting the incomes of some of the poorest people in the world. I
hope this year's Fairtrade Fortnight will give a further boost to
support for the Fairtrade movement.
