Former Young Mayor and
Youth Councillors stay active in local community
1 March, 2010
Newham's former Young Mayor Joshua Adejokun is continuing to
inspire young people to become leaders and active citizens in their
community.
At a recent event hosted by the Young Foundation Joshua
was on hand to advise the top ten applicants for this year's Youth
of Today Leadership Fund, which provides funding for youth
leadership opportunities across the country.
By sharing his experiences as a former Young Mayor and giving
support to youth leadership programmes, Joshua is continuing to
work hard so that all young people can make the most of
opportunities on offer and have a positive impact on their local
community.
Joshua is not the only former young leader from Newham still making
a difference to the lives of local residents.
A number of past Youth Councillors have continued to share their
local expertise. They help to direct the spending of over £490
million on Children and Young People's Services by providing
specific advice on what local services need to do to ensure they
meet the needs of children and young people in Newham.
Other former Youth Councillors are involved in the grant panel for
the Youth Opportunity Fund. The panel assesses applications to the
fund and awards money to provide positive activities for young
people, run by young people.
Current Young Mayor Kaycee de Belen said: "It's great to see
Joshua and other former members of the Youth Council continuing
their positive work in the community.
"Young people have so much to offer - and through the Youth Council
we're given the foundation to have an impact for more than just 12
months."
