(l-r) Kaycee finds out more about recycling from Recycling Officer Badsha Khan and David Healy, one of Newham's Waste Minimisation Officers

17 February, 2010

Young Mayor Kaycee de Belen went along to Kingsford Community School recently to promote recycling and energy-saving with the Beckton Community Forum, where more than 600 people turned up for a fun-filled, green-themed day out.

The family event was designed to help residents find out how they can reduce their carbon footprint.

Local experts were on hand to answer questions about recycling, reducing waste and using alternative energies.

It was also a chance for residents to meet their local Safer Neighbourhood Team and get more road savvy with the Road Safety Unit's computer bike simulator track.

There were lots of young people there sporting the workshop-designed T-shirts, painted faces and hand made musical instruments that they'd picked up on the day.

Kaycee said: "I really enjoy going to community events like this so I can meet young people and find out more about what they'd like to see happening in the borough. I think it's a really important part of my role, because it's one of the ways I keep in touch with what young people need and the issues that they care about.

"The environment is a big concern for lots of people my age - we inherited climate change and it's consequences and there's nothing we can do about that. But young people will play a vital role in overcoming those challenges climate change has thrown at us.

"The young people I met in Beckton know what I'm talking about - they know that the small individual actions, like using the orange recycling bags, cycling or walking shorter distances and switching to energy saving light bulbs, can collectively make a huge difference."
