Safety first for young
people at Stratford Market
10 December, 2009
Newham's Young Mayor, Kaycee de Belen, recently went to talk to
young residents about their views on community safety at the
Stratford Safety Market.
The event, held at the Stratford Shopping Centre, was
an opportunity for children, young people and families to meet
Kaycee alongside local Councillors, the Safer Neighbourhoods Team
and representatives from emergency services.
There were stalls offering personal safety advice, information from
an array of experts as well as bike tagging and a mobile phone
registering service.
To get people in the festive mood, local school children performed
yuletide songs and youngsters took part in craft activities.
Kaycee spoke to and presented awards to members of the Carpenters'
Choir following their performance on the day.
She said: "Events like this are really important because the
Council can find out first hand about local safety concerns.
"Improving community safety is one of my key priorities. I believe
that it's really important for all Newham residents to be aware of
what they can do to improve their own safety, and keep others safe
too.
"The day was a great opportunity for me to talk to local young
residents and continue promoting the positive contributions that so
many young people in Newham are making through volunteering and
other youth-led community initiatives."
