'Save the Children'
Ambassadors Summit
6 December, 2011
Newham's Young Mayor Abraham Male attended the Ambassadors Summit
hosted by Save the Children to discuss with Police, teachers,
charities and other key decision makers across London how best we
can assist in making London a 'City without
stereotypes.'
The evening consisted of a number of table top
exercises to address the matter of stereotyping on the streets,
school and whilst trying to gain employment. Each table was split
into respective boroughs and discussions ensued around the issues
young people face with regards to stereotyping and
discrimination.
One of the key issues repeated throughout each borough is the way
in which young people are viewed and dealt with by Police officers.
One of the main ways the young people wished to see this matter
addressed is to have regular meetings with their parents, teachers
and local Police officers in an attempt to build a solid working
relationship and understanding between all parties.
The evening was a great success with each borough making a pledge
as to how they will tackle stereotyping in their borough and they
will feed their pledge back through their peers and
colleagues.
Abraham's thoughts on the night were; 'We as a community need to
strive for a city without stereotypes, the young people and
decision makers in Newham can all do there bit to contribute
towards this. Stereotyping is something that happens to far too
many young people on a daily basis, often without knowing you are
doing so. If it is something that is openly discussed, as it was
this evening, then perhaps we can slowly begin to stamp it
out.'
