Youth Council
contributing to a sustainable Newham
29 January, 2010
Newham's Youth Council has taken part in a discussion which aims to
improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of the
area.
The sustainable communities consultation gathers views
from the whole community and will create the blueprint for a more
inspirational and sustainable borough.
The Youth Council was asked for input on behalf of all young
people in Newham. They helped to organise the consultation and
shared their views on seven areas including community safety, the
environment, young people, aspiration, housing, exercise and
health.
Young Mayor Kaycee de Belen said: "This is a really important
consultation that will help the Council deliver changes and
services that local residents want to see.
"There is a lot of regeneration happening in the borough at the
moment and there needs to be a plan to make the most of this
opportunity.
"The Youth Council discussed a lot of issues such as how the
Olympics will provide a boost for Newham, and how the community
will benefit specifically.
"We also spoke about the reduction in crime and how we'd like to
see more done to tackle gangs.
"Our Youth Council feels that there needs to be more green spaces
in the borough so residents can enjoy the environment. We'd also
like a greater investment in our youth centres and more activities
so we don't have to leave the borough to have fun.
"It was exciting to take part in a consultation that will help
shape the future of Newham."
The thoughts gathered in the consultation will be used to help
shape Newham's sustainable communities
strategy.
