Youth Council Election

20 May, 2009

Newham's Youth Council has elected four of its members to represent the borough at the UK Youth Parliament.

The UK Youth Parliament has a long, successful history of working with national government, including Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, as well as local government and providers of services for young people.

In the past, members have campaigned on a number of issues including transport, sex education, voting rights and the environment

The election took place during a meeting at Newham Town Hall in East Ham attended by more than 40 Youth Councillors.

The group elected Seyi Akiwowo and Shingirai Sibanda as members and Hagar Opare-Aryee and Eduardo Da-Costa as deputy members.

Reflecting on the election, Young Mayor of Newham, Joshua Adejokun, said;

"It was great that so many Youth Councillors stood as candidates for the UK Youth Parliament. It was a true contest, and this is an excellent opportunity for Newham's young people to be heard at a national level.

"I work for the young people of Newham, representing their views and campaigning for positive local change. Now we have four representatives to the UK Youth Parliament, who will take our local issues and fight for them on a regional and national level."
