Youth Council
influence crime and disorder priorities
20 January, 2010
Newham's Young Mayor Kaycee de Belen has been working with local
police and council staff to get young people talking about
crime.
She and members of the Youth Council have been making
sure the voices of young people are hear on crime and disorder
priorities for the next 12 months.
The priorities are used to ensure that Newham's approach to crime
and disorder meets the needs and expectations of the local
community.
As part of the process the Youth Council discussed ways to tackle
youth crime, whereby a young person (aged between 1 and 19) has
been a victim, as well as crimes committed by young people.
They felt that more should be done to encourage youngsters to
report when they had been a victim.
Kaycee said: "By taking part in this consultation the Youth
Council is ensuring that resources are being used to meet the needs
of local young people and the wider community.
"As Newham's Young Mayor it's one of my key priorities to reduce
crime. I feel that too many young people feel threatened by knife
crime and youth violence. We need to work together to make everyone
can feel safe and be safe.
"I think these consultations really help to make sure our
community is involved in setting local priorities. It is important
that the Youth Council can influence plans to reduce crime and
disorder and improve safety in the borough on behalf of all young
people."
