Responsibilities
The role and responsibilities of
the Young Mayor are:
Role
- Represent the interests of Newham's young people to the
Mayor, Councillors, businesses, the wider community and other
public service providers
- Represent all of Newham's young people and their interests
regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, class or sexuality
- Consult closely with the Youth Council and young people at
large to build greater understanding of young people's needs
- Promote the interests of Newham's young people to Newham
residents and externally
- Attend events of interest and importance to Newham's young
people
- Initiate projects and schemes for young people using the Young
Mayor's fund
- Offer advice and help to Councillors and Council Officers
developing services for young people
Responsibilities and Expectations
The Young Mayor of Newham can expect to;
- Meet regularly with the Mayor; Council officers; Councillors;
other organisations in the voluntary sector, or business, or public
bodies (e.g. NHS); the Youth Council; and the borough's young
people
- Deliver projects from their budget; attract additional funding
for such projects; offer advice and represent the views of young
people to decision-makers; and consult other young people on your
projects and issues up for consideration
- Be visible at opening ceremonies, award ceremonies,
consultation events, civic events, like the Mayor's Show; and
events outside the borough. This involves meeting people and giving
speeches
- Read, plans and organise responses on behalf of young people.
This will involve meeting with Youth Council members or interested
young people and reflecting their views in the response
- Be assisted and advised by a senior council officer who will
set up meetings, draft speeches, help compose letters and
responses, organise engagements and take forward the Young Mayor's
projects
