Role of a Newham Youth
Councillor
The roles and responsibilities of
Newham's Youth Councillors are to:
Role
- Represent Newham's young people and their interests to
the Mayor, Councillors, businesses, the wider community and people
providing public services, particularly to children and young
people
- Help the Young Mayor deliver his or her election promises
through providing advice, attending events of importance to young
people, and initiating projects or campaigning on local issues
affecting young residents
- Consult closely with Newham's young people to build a greater
understanding in the community of young people's needs and to
ensure that every young voice and point of view is heard
- Use their position to advise Councillors and Council Officers
developing services for young people, and explain and promote the
council services to Newham's young people
Responsibilities and Expectations
- Meet regularly with the Young Mayor through a series of formal
meetings held every two months, and at extra campaign meetings and
consultations
- Serve on committees and bodies set up by the Young Mayor to
examine specific issues, such as the Youth Opportunity Fund,
Scrutiny Committees, the Children and Young People's Board, The
local Community Police Forum, UK Youth Parliament and Young Mayor
Network
- Present to their youth area forum, their school and other youth
organisations on current issues, their work, and the work of the
Young Mayor and the Mayor
- Listen to the views and opinions of all young people and relay
these back to the Youth Council and Young Mayor
- Help promote the Young Mayor elections and encourage people to
vote
- Attend and help at events designed to engage and interest young
people
