Newham's Third
Sector
Newham's Third Sector involves all
the voluntary community and faith based organisations in the
borough. They are seen as a 'force for good' and provide a range of
essential community services to local residents often on a
volunteering basis.
The council recognises this effort and wants to work in
partnership with them to maximise benefits for residents. So, for
example, in 2008/9 the council allocated just under £18m of funding
through the Third Sector.
The council wants to encourage more Third Sector organisations to
become involved in procurement and to compete for tendered council
services on a commissioned basis.
To that end the council have invited the Third Sector to the
Newham
Partnership Board and have agreed a way of working with the
sector through the
Local
Compact.
