Newham's People
Trust
The Newham People's Trust was
established to meet the needs of a number of individuals in Newham
- children and adults - who might not otherwise get the support
they need.
The new Trust Fund brings together a number of small
charities and funds that have historically been run by the
council.
Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, wanted to make sure that the new
trust would keep to the spirit of the older funds, but would also
reflect the needs of people in today's Newham.
Sir Robin said: "I am extremely pleased that this new Trust Fund
has been established. Many of the old funds contained insignificant
amounts and were tied to small pockets of the community. The new
Fund will ensure that support can be targeted more fairly across
the borough. The Trustees will be keen to maximise income through
investments and fund-raising to ensure that the Fund is used as
effectively and as widely as possible."
The trustees are drawn from councillors, local businesses,
community organisations and the local Primary Care Trust.
Before completing the application form please
note:
- The decision to grant a request for assistance from the Fund
and the amount agreed is at the discretion of the Trustees
- The maximum amount that the Trustees will consider granting is
£2,000
- Applications are welcome all year round; however the Trustees
will aim to meet four times a year to consider applications. Upon
submission of your form you will be advised of the next scheduled
meeting of the Trustees
Examples of the things the Trust will not award grants
for include:
- Bill arrears, including rent, gas, electric, water, etc
- Business start up costs or other business related
liabilities
- Debt clearance
- Holidays abroad
- Laptops or computers
- University fees
In addition, Trustees will not consider making a grant where
existing provisions from the council or other authorities, health
or social care providers can achieve the same outcome.
Who can apply?
Applications are welcomed from anyone who is a resident in Newham,
or submitted on behalf of a resident of Newham by a third party
(for example from a registered charity, a teacher or a social
worker), or from somebody who has been placed by Newham outside of
the borough.
Categories for applications
There are two categories through which residents can make an
application.
1. Pursuit of a talent or access to a trade, profession or
calling (children and young people up to 25 years old)
Trustees may consider providing assistance to
children and young people (up to 25 years old):
- who are recognised as gifted and talented, and wish to pursue
development of this talent through avenues that are not provided
for by other providers;
- who require financial or other assistance to gain entry into a
profession, trade or calling, or to enable them to pursue their
education.
2. Assistance for inclusion, to live independently, or
access to employment
Trustees may consider providing grants to assist people who are in
financial need, who are sick or recovering, disabled, or otherwise
suffering mental or physical health, or who have a recognised
learning disability, to:
- live independently;
- participate fully in their local community through improved
inclusion;
- access employment opportunities.
Importantly though, the fund will not be used to subsidise anything
that is already available from local or other agencies.
