Where can I find older census data for my family history project?

Census data over 100 years old is available from the National Archives and can be found online at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census. This provides detailed Census records that are more than 100 years old, and is frequently used for family history projects. Records online are available at a charge, but you may access the 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 census records for free on site at The National Archives in Kew, and the Family Records Centre in Islington. How many residents are there in Newham?

There are approximately 248,400 residents in Newham, according to the 2006 Mid-Year Estimate from the Office of National Statistics. This will be updated with the 2007 Mid-Year Estimate in September 2008. This estimate is not believed to be accurate, as it is lower than the 2001 mid-year population estimate. It does not reflect the increase in housing development that has occurred since then or the arrival of Newham's new population from the European Union.
