Using music to raise aspirations

Every Child a Musician

Learning a musical instrument is a fantastic opportunity. It builds important life skills such as confidence, dedication and motivation. And what's more, it's great fun!

Resilience document We believe that all our children deserve that opportunity. But it can also be expensive.

That's why we've introduced Every Child a Musician. It offers free musical tuition to every year 5 pupil in the borough, for two years, at no extra cost to parents. Children can choose to play the trumpet, trombone, clarinet, violin, viola, flute, guitar or keyboard. You can find out more here.

The lessons, provided in school time, focus on learning to play the instrument, reading music, and taking part in musical performances. We know that playing a musical instrument can improve other skills too - like concentration and team working - that can help increase achievement at school.

Our young people have high aspirations. We want to help them achieve these aspirations and fulfil their potential. We all know times are tough but we are committed to continuing to invest in our young people. By doing so we are instilling in them a sense of self-worth that will help them gain the personal resilience they need to succeed in later life.

It's not just us who think Every Child a Musician is a great opportunity - Film maker Danny Boyle and School's Minister Nick Gibb have also been impressed by the musical talents of our young people.

And it's not just about young people. Every Child a Musician offers opportunities to wider Newham residents too. As part of the project Newham Council is helping talented musicians who live within the borough to become music tutors.

125 tutors have been employed to work across 62 schools taking part in the programme so far and support is available to local people who want to get into these jobs through the Local Tutor Training programme. This year we are committed to build on the success of Every Child a Musician and continuing to support local people to get the jobs it offers. Find out how you can get involved.
