You can help reduce
air pollution
Newham residents can take several
steps to help reduce the risk from air pollution.
On the road
- Use public transport wherever possible
- Avoid short journeys as they are far less efficient for
your vehicle
- Car share particularly on popular journeys such as the
'school run'
- Drive smoothly, consistently and at the speed limit.
These will ensure your fuel use is more efficient and reduces
emissions
- Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and that
you comply to emissions standards
At home
In the garden
- Compost garden waste rather than burning. (We discourage
bonfires as they cause air pollution and can annoy neighbours. If
bonfires are a persistant problem, legal action can be taken by the
Environmental Health Service)
- Make use of local services for waste treatment and rubbish
removal
- Recycle
- Make use of the waste services provided by Newham
DIY around the house
- When using paints, varnishes, glues, wood preservatives etc use
water based or low solvent products
