Justice Seen, Justice Done

break

Justice Seen Justice Done is a Government programme which is about opening up the criminal justice service and making it more transparent to the public.

Justice Seen, Justice Done LogoNewham Council and the Met Police are looking to support this by publicising sentencing outcomes or punishments of interest to the local community. Ensuring the Newham public feel updated, informed and reassured is the aim.

Community Payback

Community Payback is most visible form of punishment where offenders 'pay back' to the community. Community Payback is not only a tough punishment for criminals but also benefits local communities and helps to improve the local area. It also helps victims of crime and antisocial behaviour to see local reparation.

Community Payback is also an effective way to prevent them from carrying out any further offences. This means fewer victims of crime and antisocial behaviour in future. Magistrates and Judges can order between up to 300 Community Payback hours to offenders who are of low risk to the community.

The scheme is run by the London Probation Service, in partnership with LB Newham and local police Safer Neighbourhoods Team. London Probation carries out a health and safety assessment, considers the offender suitability for projects and supervises the offenders when working out in the community.

Offenders completed 34 Community Payback outdoor projects in Newham during 2009 working over 30,000 hours ranging from clearing rubbish, cutting back overgrown foliage and removing or painting over graffiti.

Have your say and see justice done in your area

We want residents to get involved and suggest projects that they would like to see done by Community Payback in their local neighbourhood. The type of work involved could include:

  • Graffiti removal
  • Cutting and cleaning overgrown foliage
  • Clear rubbish from land and alleyways
  • Refurbish parks and playgrounds

If you or your community group would like to suggest a project, you can:

  • Contact your local police Safer Neighbourhoods Team. Find details of your local team by visiting the Met Police website or you can call 0300 123 1212.
  • Submit your suggestion by email to http://localcrime.direct.gov.uk/

Once you have submitted your suggestion, we will check and confirm if the work is suitable for Community Payback and when the work will happen. Contact the local Probation Services office on 0208 475 7930 to find out more.
