What the CDRP has done so far

In targeting issues such as anti-social behaviour, substance misuse, youth offending and violent crime, we have seen excellent results.

1. Anti-Social Behaviour
  • Successful prosecution of 96 traders who sold alcohol, tobacco and fireworks illegally to children
  • More Police and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in crime and ASB hotspots
  • Youth Inclusion Support Panels (YISPs), contributing to the reduction of offending and ASB, from young people
  • The issue of 18 ASBOs within 2005
  • The issue of dispersal orders to areas where persistent crime and ASB has occurred
  • High-tech CCTV cameras in more locations
  • The removal of 4,224untaxed or abandoned vehicles from Newham streets in 2005
  • A 58% reduction in the number of abandoned vehicles that were set on fire in one year alone
  • In six months alone, we took action against people 558 times for dumping rubbish on the streets
  • Firm action taken against more than 60 nuisance neighbours

2. Community Reassurance

  • Over a 100 vulnerable premises targeted hardened
  • A Safer Neighbourhood Team in every ward by April 2006
  • Engaging with the community through:
    • Met Volunteer Programme
    • Metropolitan Special Constabulary
    • Volunteer Police Cadets
    • Neighbourhood Watch Schemes

3. Reducing Violent Crime

Tackling Domestic Violence

  • The multi-agency Domestic Violence Forum, recording domestic violent incidents, collecting and analysing information, referring victims to the appropriate agencies for help
  • Kidz Crew: An initiative aiming to protect and stop the cycle of violence for children and young people
  • Chrysalis Project: A team who works with young perpetrators aged 12-17 years old who are violent or abusive to their siblings and parents

4. Reducing Race Hate Crime

  • 35.5% of racial offences that took place between April '05- Feb '06 have been detected
  • During the same period reported crime has been reduced while more cases have been sent to court
  • In 2005, we prosecuted 7 offenders in one area alone, for racially harassing the staff and customers of a shop
  • The CDRP produced a Race Hate Crime Directory for communities in Newham in 2005
  • The Police are consistently identifying one in three perpetrators of race hate crime.

5. Reducing Key Crime

  • Safe Car campaign - raising awareness about vehicle crime prevention in Newham
  • Operation Autumn (2005) - more police officers in the streets tackling street crime and robbery
  • During Operation Autumn there was:
    • a 24% reduction in street robbery
    • a 14% reduction in burglary
    • a 41% reduction in street robbery in Canning Town alone
  • Be Safe and Sound scheme - free home fire safety checks and smoke alarm installation carried out in Newham by the London Fire Brigade.

Substance Misuse

  • Specialist Substance Misuse Team (SSMT): a single point of contact service for residents who need support around their use.
  • Community Drugs Team (CDT): working in partnership with SSMT to provide a rapid access to substitute prescribing for Drug Intervention Programme clients
  • The closure of over 200 cannabis houses and over 16 crack houses in 2005

Youth Offending

  • The number of first time young offenders has reduced by 25% between April and December '05
  • Newham ranks tenth in London for the rate of young offenders despite 40% of our residents being under 25 years old compared to a London average of 31%
  • London Fire Brigade have delivered LIFE courses in Newham to improve the life skills and behaviour of young people at risk of becoming arsonist
