Food hygiene &
food standards inspections
The Food Safety Unit carries out
routine inspections of registered food premises to ensure that food
is being prepared properly and stored hygienically.
Officers will also carry out checks on the quality,
composition and labelling of food.
Routine inspections are the best way of educating businesses and
maintaining good standards of food hygiene within the food
sector.
Officers will also check as to whether businesses are operating a
food safety management system based on the principles of food
safety hazard analysis. All businesses are expected to have
procedures in place to ensure that food is produced safely and that
critical points in food processes are adequately controlled.
Depending on what they find during inspections, Officers may give
verbal advice. However, it is more common that legal requirements
are stipulated in letters and notices served on the food business
operator. In more extreme cases businesses may be closed or owners
prosecuted.
