Hazardous Waste Collection

break

The HWCDS generally accepts most flammable, toxic or corrosive substances.

They cannot accept explosives, nerve gases, pressurised vessels (gas cylinders), radioactive wastes (including low level materials such as Uranyl acetate/nitrate) clinical waste or biological specimens. To find out more please call 020 7332 3433.

There are several points to remember when packing and labelling hazardous waste for disposal:

  • You must clearly label each individual item to indicate its contents.
  • You should label each item, which cannot be identified as 'unknown'. You will need to complete a collection request form listing the items for disposal giving precise details of the contents of every box (which should be numbered), including the weight or volume of each item.
  • A list of contents should be attached to each box, with your name and address. If more than one box is used, list each box on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Where particularly hazardous chemicals are concerned, mark box/containers accordingly, e.g. 'Carcinogens - Extreme Caution', 'Water Reactive - keep dry', etc. it is important to complete the form accurately
  • You must pack waste in stout cardboard boxes, metal drums or similar closed containers. We will not accept loose materials, unpacked glass containers, damaged or leaking containers.
