Recycling

break

Recycling has got a whole lot easier in Newham. Most residents will have received a new 180 litre wheeled recycling bin, which has a larger capacity and replaces the orange bags.

Revised collection dates will be in force after the Early May Bank Holiday. See the changes between 7-12 May.

How the scheme works

Recycling bin You will have recently received a recycling bin, which has an orange lid.

Your rubbish will now be collected in the morning and your recycling collected in the afternoon/evening of the same day. Find out your refuse and recycling collection day here.

Now you have your recycling bin, you do not need to use orange recycling bags. Recyclable material should be placed directly into your recycling bin. Do not put recycling material into plastic bags before placing in the bin.

Please note that residents who live in a high or low rise property will continue to use the orange bags.

Here are some useful tips about using your recycling bin:

  • Do not put non-recyclable waste into your recycling bin (see the table below for a list of what you can put in your recycling bin)
  • Do not put recycling into bags before placing in the bin
  • You can now recycle all cardboard - flatten before placing in the bin
  • Rinse items to keep your recycling bin clean
  • Place your bin near the edge of your property on your collection day
  • You don't need to use orange recycling bags once you receive your bin

When items have a recycling mark on them it does not mean that they are recoverable. Our markets demand that we have to be clear on this but when circumstances change to allow more materials we will let you know.

Your rubbish bin should only be used for waste that cannot be recycled or composted including:

  • Food scraps
  • Nappies
  • Meat trays
  • Yoghurt pots
  • Polystyrene

DO keep your bin clean and tidy
DO NOT overfill your bin - the lid should be fully closed.
DO NOT leave extra waste at the side of either bin

Battery recycling

Household batteries should not be put in the your rubbish bin. Dispose of your batteries safely by taking them to battery recycling points, available in most supermarkets and shops which sell batteries.

Battery recycling points are also available in Stratford, East Ham, Green Street, Forest Gate and Manor Park libraries.

To find out more about battery recycling visit the Directgov website.

Cooking oil

Cooking Oil can be taken to Jenkins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre where there is a separate container for this material.

This is free for Newham residents who take along cooking oil from domestic properties.

Cooking oil from commercial premises is not permitted at Jenkins Lane, there are numerous companies in the private sector who can arrange collection and disposal from commercial premises.
