Sustainability
Newham is committed to
strengthening the way in which we address Climate Change and are
keen to place sustainability at the heart of our
organisation.
We take our responsibility to cut carbon emissions as
an organisation seriously, and recognise that reducing carbon
reduces costs. We are committed to developing the opportunities
that come with reducing our carbon and are working hard to deliver
sustainable communities.
To help us respond to the challenges that climate change presents,
we have in place a Senior Level Sustainability Board and a wider
Carbon Management Change Team. The Change Team are a group of key
officers responsible for supporting the delivery of carbon
reduction projects.
The Board's role is to monitoring the progress of projects we are
carrying out and ensure we are achieving our targets. By committing
our support and resources, we signal our dedication to delivering
more energy efficient services.
We have recently compiled the data from our Newham's baseline
emissions from our operations and owned assets; which include our
buildings, fleet of vehicles and lighting for the borough: Our
baseline emissions for 2008/09 are 54,733 tonnes of C02.

10:10 Campaign
The London Borough of Newham has backed the
10:10 Campaign as
a further symbol of its ongoing commitment to reduce CO2 emissions.
Singing up to the 10:10 Commitment builds on our existing plans to
reduce the C02 from our council operations. We understand that
action by Local Authorities will be critical to achieving the
Government's long term carbon emissions target reduction of 80% by
2050.
Nottingham Declaration
To show our commitment to addressing climate change, Newham was the
first of the 2012 Games host boroughs to sign up to the
Nottingham Declaration in 2007. Signing the
Declaration set us the challenge of improving our environmental
impact in a number of different ways and we've been strengthening
the way we address climate change and the challenge it presents
ever since.
