Renting from a private landlord can be the best option available for many people whether you are single, married or have children.
Don't wait report the problem to your landlord or agent as soon as possible and follow it up in writing.
If you are a private tenant renting property or room from a private landlord and you are on a low income, you may be able to claim and receive Local Housing Allowance (LHA).

If you get behind in your rent payments you may be able to pay rent arrears in stages. Contact your landlord to negotiate, alternatively seek free professional advice from local service centre or Community Links or call Debtline on 0808 808 4000.
You cannot simply walk out or you may have to pay rent arrears. You must notify your landlord and get their agreement in writing if possible to avoid problems. The length of notice will depend on your agreement.
