Gaining Higher Level Teaching Assistant status

break

Experienced Teaching Assistants who wish to become an HLTA in Newham must discuss the possibility of an HLTA position in their school with their Head Teacher.

If you are in any other Local Authority (LA) contact your own personnel department. They will have information.

Due to the cuts in TDA funding, the authority is no longer able to fund HLTA training. Schools or individual applicants may fund the training.

Qualifications required

In order to register for HLTA preparation, you need to have English and Maths GCSE at grade 'C', or an equivalent qualification or, Level 2 Adult Literacy and Numeracy certificates.

Application process

If the Head Teacher agrees to support you, the process is as follows:

  • Contact a Regional Provider of Assessment (RPA).
  • Download the standards for this award from the Training and Development Agency for schools website and read them so that you are ready to discuss them with your Head Teacher.
  • Your Head Teacher interviews you and fills in the application form ensuring that you fulfil the criteria for either the Preparation route or the Full Training route to gaining HLTA status.
  • The completed application form is submitted to the RPA.
  • The RPA will inform you of the dates of the preparation and assessment and will send you all the information needed for you to bring along on the first day.
  • Once you have completed the preparation and/ or training, which include support in putting together a portfolio of evidence, you submit your evidence to a company called Babcock 4S (formerly VT Four S) who are the Regional Provider of Assessment (RPA). A visiting assessor will then assess you. If you are successful you will be awarded HLTA status. You may be able to take on further responsibilities and be paid at a higher rate, throughout Newham and neighbouring boroughs.

HLTA and support staff development information events

Babcock 4S will be running HLTA and Support Staff Development Information events which will give information on gaining HLTA Status and other support staff qualifications. For further information contact Babcock 4S or visit http://www.teachnewham.co.uk/globAl_pgs/SupportStaff.html.
