Reservists across the country will be hanging up their usual work clothes on Wednesday (25 June) and instead be wearing their Service uniforms to work to demonstrate the contribution ordinary citizens make to the forces. Uniform to Work Day also allows Reservists to show their employers how much they value the support they receive.

The council will also be flying the Armed Forces flag from its Town Halls in East Ham and Stratford to mark Armed Forces Day.

Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: “Reservists play an important role in our community and the armed forces. We are proud of all our residents who are Reservists and grateful to those local businesses that employ them day to day and support them in their Reserve forces role.

“Reservists come from every walk of life. The invaluable experience gained through their armed service jobs can directly benefit employers through exceptional team working, leadership and crisis management skills.”

Newham has a proud association with the armed forces, being home to G Company 7 Rifles at The Cedars Army Reserve Centre in Portway, West Ham. The company were granted freedom of the borough in 2012.

As an employer Newham Council will support staff who are Reservists or thinking about become one, by being flexible around military commitments and offering leave of absence with pay. Paid leave is also granted for attendance at military training camps.

Residents aged 18 to 43 interested in becoming an Army Reservist can visit G Company 7 Rifles at The Cedars on Tuesday evenings between 7.30pm and 9.30pm or by calling 0208 472 0140.
