Fly-tipper counts the cost of illegal dumping in Newham

Fly-tipper dumped eleven mattresses in a Forest Gate street.

An audacious fly-tipper who dumped eleven mattresses in a Forest Gate street has been made to pay almost £2000 after pleading guilty at Thames Magistrates Court.

Marius Plesu, 41, of Chatsworth Road, Clapton E12 was caught red-handed on CCTV cameras dumping the mattresses in Field Road E15 in the early hours of 9 October 2018.

CCTV operators managed to capture an image of the White Mercedes cage-type vehicle and its registration plate as it drove away.

The following day members of Newham Council’s fly-tip team interviewed Plesu who admitted the offence. His van was subsequently seized by officers.

Sentencing Thames magistrates imposed a fine of £923, costs of £920 and a victim surcharge of £92. The court further ordered that the van, worth £7,500 be handed over to the council for sale by auction.

Councillor James Beckles, Newham cabinet member for crime and community safety said: “This is a great result for the fly-tip team. It’s great to see someone who was prepared to so recklessly dump unwanted and unsightly rubbish on a residential Newham street, pay the price. Hopefully the fines and costs, plus the loss of his van, will put a stop to this man’s anti-social behaviour.”
