25 June 2012 in Council and democracy and Mayor and Events

The only army battalion in Newham was awarded the Freedom of the Borough by Mayor Sir Robin Wales at a prestigious town hall public ceremony.

Hundreds of residents lined the streets on Saturday as soldiers of G Company 7 RIFLES, who are based in Stratford, marched down Broadway and were joined by the regiment's Waterloo Band & Bugles.

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales presented the award at Stratford Old Town Hall in recognition of the unit's courageous service.

He said: "Awarding the Freedom of the Borough to the 7 RIFLES gives me the opportunity to thank them on behalf of the borough for their gallant and courageous service. The true strength of the Rifles is not just in the front line - it is in the homes and hearts of people across Newham. This was also a day to celebrate the enduring love and support of the families and friends of our service personnel.

"The respect the community showed the Rifles as they marched was genuine and so thoroughly deserved. I want to thank our soldiers once again for their bravery and sacrifice to keep us all safe in a troubled world."
