Groundbreaking work to secure finance for the healthcare estate in Newham in line for prestigious national award

An innovative £200m partnership between NHS Newham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), East London Foundation Trust (ELFT) and Newham Council, that will secure funding to build new health and care centres, practices and homes across Newham, has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Together they have set up Health and Care Space Newham Ltd, the first company of its kind in the country, which will use an innovative finance model to develop and build 28,000 square metres of new facilities to fix Newham’s current poor health building stock.

The project has been announced as a finalist in the national Health and Local Government Partnership Award category at the HSJ Awards 2019. The annual awards seek to recognise and reward outstanding work in health in the UK.

Jason Kelder, project lead at NHS Newham CCG said: “We are delighted that our innovation in Newham has been recognised by the HSJ. The planned development covers investment until 2035 and will build four new state of the art health and wellbeing hubs, eight new practices and at least 180 affordable homes for keyworkers. GPs will occupy 70% of the final medical estate and over 410,000 registered patients will benefit.

“The project operates a unique, collaborative financial model that will also provide new income streams through affordable rental income and large efficiency savings. These will be recirculated into the local healthcare system, with partners and staff benefiting from affordable lower rents at the same time.”

Councillor Susan Masters, Newham Council’s Cabinet member for adults and health, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award. Health and Care Space Newham is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when council and health providers work together. It’s a ground-breaking and innovative scheme that brings together a wide range of services and supports our promise to put people at the heart of everything we do.

The winners of the HSJ Awards will be announced in London on 6 November.
