Memorial service to honour the life of local campaigner and well respected councillor

A memorial service is being held this Friday 1 August in Beckton for a councillor who spent almost 30 years serving his local community.
Beckton Ward Councillor Alec Kellaway, passed away at his home last month after a short illness. Those wishing to pay their respects are welcome to attend the service at St Mark’s Church in Tollgate Road.

Cllr Kellaway, 61, was a Mayoral Adviser for Finance and chair of the Investment and Accounts Committee. He was an economist and market researcher and was first elected to Newham Council in 1987 when he represented the Social Democratic Party Liberal Alliance. He was re-elected in South Ward as a Liberal Democrat in 1990 and 1994 and as a Labour Party councillor in 1998. He represented Beckton Ward as a Labour councillor from 2002.

Councillor Kellaway had formerly served as executive member for business and skills and was keen to see more young people go into training and education. He also served as a governor at a number of the borough’s schools.
