Newham Council recognised as most improved in Good Food for London report

Newham Council’s work in securing a healthy and sustainable food future has been recognised as part of a London wide report.

The Good Food for London report, now in its ninth year, reveals which councils are leading the way in securing a better food environment and culture for their residents, workers and visitors.

Newham Council, alongside Southwark, was recognised as one of the most improved councils, demonstrating significant progress since 2018. Newham moved up seven places since last year to 22nd, the second biggest improvement in the table.

The Good Food for London league table shows how councils are taking action to support access to healthy and sustainable food across 11 measures. It ranks performance on these measures, to assess if each council is supporting community food growing, infant health, the London Living Wage, Fairtrade, sustainable catering, animal welfare, healthier food environments and school food.

Newham was recognised for the following actions:

  • Appointing a Head of Food strategy who will work across the council and partners
  • A Good Food Retail plan which outlines some ambitious commitments and a list of targets for change that are going to have a big impact
  • A section dedicated to Good Food in the council’s Health and Wellbeing strategy.

Jason Strelitz, Director of Public Health said:  “This is just the first step – we see this Good Food league table as a really valuable annual audit opportunity.  It helps us shape our improvement plan to really make a difference to our residents in Newham over the next few years”.
