Statement from the Mayor of Newham: Newham condemns Southwark terror attack

5 June 2017 in Community safety and Council and democracy
Newham is a proud London borough, a truly diverse place , and we are proud that in our borough people from all backgrounds come together as one community.
There will always be those who seek to divide us or who want to challenge our unity, and our values.

That was the case again on Saturday night when contemptable fanatics drove a van into innocent people enjoying a night out in South East London, before embarking on an horrific knife attack.

This morning the people of Newham stand with all those affected by this tragedy.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives and with those who are injured.

We have joined others around the country in flying our Union flag at the Old Town Hall in Stratford at half-mast, in solidarity with Southwark. We also salute the bravery of the London’s emergency services for the swift and effective way they dealt with the attack.

As London comes to terms with another terrorist attack, it is inevitable that security may be tightened. You may see more police and armed officers on the street.

The important message is to stay calm and be vigilant. Our emergency services prepare day in, day out for these situations. If however you suspect suspicious activity or are aware of hate crime or increased tensions in your community, report this via the Metropolitan Police’s 101 number or dial 999 if there is fear of immediate danger. You can also contact the Counter Terrorism Policing number on 0800 789 321.

Tomorrow at 11am we will hold a minute’s silence in all of our council buildings. At East Ham Town Hall I invite residents, council workers and local students to join me as across the country we stop to remember the dead, injured, and the bereaved.

It will, as it always does, strengthen our resolve to refuse to cower in the face of those who seek to terrify, maim and kill. We will stand up to hate. Our strong message is that extremists of any kind will never win.
