Newham housing drive transforms garages

Garages are to be transformed into new homes – thanks to Newham Council.
An application by the council to build two affordable, three-bedroom, two-storey houses, on Mortham Street, Stratford, razing 15 private garages, was approved by Newham councillors. The decision was made at a Local Development Committee meeting earlier this month (September).

Newham Council’s Cllr Andrew Baikie, executive member for housing and customer services, said: “This a great example of how we are putting housing at the top of the agenda in Newham.

"We are committed to helping ensure our residents get the best housing. We have fought for and been given 308 of the 322 family homes for social rent in the former Athletes Village in the Olympic Park.

“We have established a shared equity scheme to give Newham residents a way into affordable home ownership. In addition, we will buy and build a minimum of 2,000 new affordable homes between 2013 and 2018 which will be available for residents to rent privately."
