Newham schools continue to perform well above national average

Newham schools’ performance in key areas of education has once again placed the borough amongst the top 10 performing local authorities in England – as shown by this year’s Key Stage 2 SATs results, published today by the Department for Education.

Councillor Julianne Marriott, cabinet member for education, children and young people, said: “We have a brilliant family of schools in Newham who work together to provide a fantastic education for our children. Our schools offer so many opportunities, from the chance to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, represent our country at football and learn Chinese and they also get great SATS results.”

  • An impressive 76 percent of children in Newham primary schools achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, which compares to a rate of 65 percent in the rest of the country and means Newham ranked 5th nationally.
  • 87 percent of pupils in Newham schools achieved the expected standard in maths while 38 percent met the higher standard, putting Newham 5th and 8th respectively. Newham’s score in maths was 107 –and puts our children in 6th place nationally.
  • 16 percent of the borough’s children achieved the higher standard in  reading, writing and maths, which means  Newham has improved by 13 places in the national league table to 8th

In grammar, punctuation and spelling, (GPS) results were similarly impressive, with 87 percent of students achieving the expected standard and 52 percent meeting the higher standard, putting Newham in 5th in the national league table.

New Interim Director of Education, Sue Imbriano said: “These results are a tribute to the hard work, dedication and ambition of both our students, and our wonderful teachers, and I look forward to working with all our schools to continue to offer our pupils the best possible start in life.”
