Newham schools deliver strong GCSE results in line with national trend

23 August 2013 in Education and Young people
Following nine successive years of improving results, Newham secondary schools have seen a slight decrease in attainment on the headline 5A*-C GCSE including English and Maths measure for 2013, in line with the national trend.
Mayor Sir Robin Wales, Cllr Quintin Peppiatt and Plashet School head teacher Rachel McGowan with pupils.
The indicative figure for Newham schools in 2013 is 57.7% which is subject to amendment after appeals for remarking and other administrative changes. The final figure for 2012 was two percentage points higher following those changes. Since 2009, Newham secondary schools have shown strong improvement from 47% of students obtaining five or more A* to C grades including English and Maths at GCSE or equivalent in 2009 to 62% in 2012.
These indicative figures include the results from three main sessions of examinations: May/June 2012 (pupils who were then in Year 10), December/January 2013 (Year 11) and May/June 2013 (Year 11).
Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham and Councillor Quintin Peppiatt, Executive Member for Children and Young People, went along to Plashet School in East Ham to meet pupils as they were finding out their results.
Cllr Peppiatt said: “We should congratulate the many young people in Newham secondary schools who have passed with flying colours owing to their hard work along with the support of parents, guardians and school staff.
“The picture is however a mixed one. There can be no doubt that after nine successive years of improvement in GCSE pass rates some pupils have suffered from the uncertainty brought about by changes in central government policy. We will redouble our efforts with all Newham maintained secondary schools to understand these challenges better so that we can continue to work together to drive up standards and results.”
