The offer will see Newham’s residents given the opportunity to attend the World Para Athletics Championships at the London Stadium this summer (14 - 23 July) at a discounted price.

Ahead of the Summer of World Athletics, which also includes the IAAF World Championships London 2017, the medallists launched the ticket offer with the Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, Chief Executive Kim Bromley-Derry and pupils from Carpenters Primary School.

Gold, who came second in the T33 100m at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and Akabusi, a multiple Olympic, world and European medallist in the 4×400m relay and 400m hurdles, put the schoolchildren through their paces with a mini sports day.

They also educated the pupils about the training that goes into competing at a world class level and spoke to them about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch the World Para Athletics Championships this summer during sessions on the first three days of the event.

The exclusive discount offer is only available to Newham residents enabling them to buy adult tickets for as little as £8 and children’s tickets (for under 16s) for £3. Residents will be able to attend the opening night, watch the heats and the finals of some of the races.

Toby Gold said: “As an athlete who started my athletics career in the lead up to the London 2012 Paralympic Games. it was such an inspiration for me as I developed in the sport. I am extremely excited at the prospect of being out there on the track at the World Para Athletics Championships in front of a home crowd, it will be a massive highlight in my career.

“It is fantastic that the organisers and Newham can come together to offer something special for residents and I hope as many as possible grab the chance to come and watch me and the other world-class athletes compete. I had a great year in 2016, winning silver in Rio, and I can’t wait to see what I can do in London.”

Kriss Akabusi, said: “It was great to meet schoolchildren who will be attending the World Para Athletics Championships later this summer. London 2017 is shaping up to be the biggest sporting event in the world this year and Newham residents have been given an incredible opportunity to cheer on our athletes as they compete to win medals for the country.”

The ticketing initiative comes on the back of the free tickets offered to every school in Newham for the World Para Athletics Championships London 2017. It is also part of the community benefits from the council’s investment in the London Stadium and in the Summer of World Athletics.

Newham residents can apply for tickets for the weekender of para sport between 14-16 July. The discount is available from today (23 March) until Thursday 6 April.

Sir Robin Wales helped secure the deal for the borough and said: “We invested in the former Olympic Stadium so we could secure the legacy of the Games, make it a multi-use venue for sporting events like the World Para Athletics Championships and provide benefits and opportunities for our residents.

“These benefits are now being realised and this is a fantastic opportunity for our residents to see the world’s greatest para athletes on their doorstep and give so many of our schoolchildren the chance to experience a World Championships.”
