Somewhere over the rainbow

Residents crossing a rainbow pedestrian crossing

The second Forest Gayte Pride parade (June 30) attracted hundreds of members of the LGBTQ community together with local people and businesses – in a day of colour, camp, music and fun.

One of the highlights of the day was the rainbow pedestrian crossing, a special vinyl transfer road marking, laid by Newham Council to help celebrate diversity and inclusion in the borough.

Councillor Rachel Tripp, cabinet member for the environment and highways said: “It was so inspiring joining the parade alongside Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz. To see Woodgrange Market bedecked in so many rainbows, with the whole community coming together in joy and friendship was fantastic, and really let our LGBTQ community know how much we love and value them all.”

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said: “This was an amazing and inclusive event driven by brilliant residents celebrating the diversity of Newham. Everyone had such fun, and the rainbow pedestrian crossing was brilliant.”
