Statement from Mayor Fiaz following confirmation of three Coronavirus deaths in Newham 18 March 2020

Dear Newham Resident,

I am deeply sorry to have to report that we have experienced our first Coronavirus (Covid-19) deaths in Newham, alongside an increase of confirmed cases to 23.  I am profoundly saddened to hear about the deaths of three victims of the virus. I know that you will join me, and all here at the Council, in sending our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to their family and friends.

At this moment we know little about the individual circumstances of the people involved other than they tested positive for Coronavirus.  This tragic news underlines the importance of the measures we all have to implement to try to suppress the spread of coronavirus by following the advice issued by the Government and the health services.

As the situation around us is changing so rapidly, Newham Council is working very closely with colleagues in the National Health Service to support Public Health England and the national effort to slow the transmission of Coronavirus.

That’s why I’m so thankful for all our heroic NHS staff who are working hard to support Newham’s residents. That’s why it’s also really important that we do our bit to help by taking notice of, and sharing, the public health personal hygiene messages that can keep us, our families, and our community safe.

Now more than ever, don’t forget the expert advice. If you have a new continuous cough or a high temperature, you need to stay at home for seven days. But if you live with someone who has these symptoms, you must stay at home for 14 days. This will help protect others in the community while the individual is infectious.

You do not need to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation, and for the latest government advice visit www.gov.uk/coronavirus.
