Warning to residents of fake calls seeking banking details for a refund

30 November 2015 in Community safety and Finance
Newham Council is warning residents to be on their guard against fake calls claiming to be the council and requesting people provide their bank account details for a refund.
The council has been made aware of a number of residents receiving calls claiming to be from the council telling residents they have paid too much Council Tax and requesting they provide their bank details for a refund.

We never call and ask for bank details because we think you are owed a refund for any reason.

If anyone believes they have received a fake call, they can contact the council by calling 020 8430 2000 to check.
