Stratford Town Centre
The transformation of Stratford town centre to introduce two-way traffic on Great Eastern Road, The Grove and Broadway has mostly been completed.
The key changes you can see in the town centre are:
- A new road layout so that vehicles can drive in both directions
- Separated cycle lanes so that people feel safer cycling in the town centre
- Upgraded footways to create more space for pedestrians
- Upgraded crossings and new crossings at locations where people prefer to cross
- New trees and planted areas to make Stratford greener
- New benches and seating areas with planting
- Introduced a 20mph speed limit around Stratford shopping centre
- New loading, parking and drop-off areas
- More cycle racks at key locations
- An informal play area at the Grove, near Morrisons
- Improved lighting in the town centre
- New water bottle filling stations that will be in use shortly
We are currently reviewing the scheme to check for minor faults and make additional improvements in response to feedback from residents, businesses and key stakeholders.

Crossrail in Newham
The Elizabeth Line is our new cross-London rail service that will connect Reading and Heathrow in the west, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via a new tunnel under central London.
Newham has four stations on the north east branch (to Shenfield) at Stratford, Manor Park, Forest Gate and Maryland and one station on the south eastern branch at Custom House.
Newham residents along the route can now enjoy faster journey times to central London, as well as more spacious air-conditioned trains and step free access.

This page list the key improvements we are making in Maryland, Forest Gate and Manor Park in preparation for the arrival of the Elizabeth line in the near future.
Maryland station
Improvements to the area around the station
We have secured £3.022m from Transport for London to improve the area around Maryland Station. Works started in spring 2019 and we aim to completed these by the end of 2020.
Key improvements include:
- Replacing the roundabout with a new signalised ‘T’ junction to improve traffic flows
- New controlled crossings to make it safer for pedestrians
- Much wider footways, in particular at the station entrance to create a safe and welcoming arrival to Maryland
- New public spaces with trees, seating and cycle parking
- The “Twisty Clock” will be slightly repositioned and the clock face improved
- Introducing a 20mph speed limit and traffic calming measures
- Better bus stops, parking, loading and taxi rank facilities
- New white lighting and CCTV to deter anti-social behaviour

Forest Gate Station
We have secured £2.298m from Transport for London to improve the area around Forest Gate Station. Works started on site in summer 2017 and are mostly completed.
Key improvements include:
- Wider pavements, review of level changes outside the station and resurfacing of footways
- Removal of the slip road to Woodgrange Road from Forest Lane. This will become a signalised T-junction with better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, and a new public space where the clock and trough will be relocated
- Improvements to public spaces, including new trees and planting, seating areas and better lighting
- Introducing a 20mph speed limit and traffic calming measures.
Works that still need to be completed include planting more trees in the local area, installing ‘Forest Gate’ cycle racks outside the station and creating a water connection to the fountain for drinking water.
Manor Park Station
We have secured £1.388m from Transport for London to improve the space around Manor Park Station. While we have delivered most of the improvements, due to other ongoing works we have been unable to complete works on Manor Park Road. We aim to complete these in spring 2020.
Key improvements include:
- Wider pavements, review of level changes outside the station and resurfacing of footways
- Relocation of the existing crossing and bus stops
- Improvements to public spaces, including better lighting and new cycle stands
- Introducing a 20mph speed limit and traffic calming measures.
